Another Huge Step!
I never thought I'd be writing this post - even a few weeks ago.
On Friday I put together a tall cat tower thing for our living room. I thought that August would like being up high and going into the little houses when he wasn't outside. August immediately climbed all the way to the top to explore, but he's not been up there much since that time. Jabez has completely rejected it and I don't think he's even tried to climb on it at all. Milky Way, on the other hand, LOVES it. He sits on it a lot and loves to scratch the posts. I'm so glad.
Because of this, we've also been allowing Milky to be out in the house with Jabez inside. There was only one incident where Milky smacked Jabez. I videoed them and the video clearly shows that Jabez deflected the swat. I put Milky back into his room after that. I think he may have connected attacking Jabez to being put in his room.
Anyway, today I came home from work for lunch because August was still outside. I decided to let Milky out of his room and then I was feeling sick distracted and went back to work... without putting Milky away. I still felt sick, and I realized that I had left him out, so I went home again soon after that for the day. I got home and the cats appeared to be in their same places as when I left. So good! I've left them out together for about 5 hours and we've had no incidents. In fact, Jabez did seem as scared of Milky. I've just been doing normal things around the house. I read in bed for a while until I felt a little better. Then I played the piano and now I'm sitting back at the computer doing work that I need to catch up on from the missed hours today.
Does this have something to do with the cat tower? I don't know, but since that seems to be Milky's new place to be, then maybe. He is nervous when he's too high up (remember he started out only underneath the couch), but he has sat up at the shoulder-level platform.
I'm very hopeful that we've overcome the hurdle and that we can live a gate-free life again. It is one of the things we most want in our home.
