August
After all this business with Milky Way, you think that I'd be content to let sleeping cats lie. Unfortunately, my sister told me that a family moved out of the house across the street from her and they left behind their six month old kitten!! What the heck? No one was stepping forward to rescue it, so I decided that I would. I purchased what I call the kitten pen and some kitten food and made an appointment at my veterinary clinic for the new guy. Steven and I even chose a name!
By the time I had a chance to get there (a week later), someone else has swooped in and taken the kitten plus another stray cat. I was so bummed. Like, depressed and lamenting. Why?? I went to craigslist and found a posting for free kittens about an hour away from where I live. I texted Steven (I was still at my sister's in NY state) and asked him what he thought and he said that we should get one if we could. I called and there was one kitten left. The orange one (just the very one I wanted)! We arranged for a pickup time for me the next day and that is what I did. He was adopted by us on October 7, 2018.
August is seven weeks old! I haven't had a kitten that young since Hansel and that was 16 years ago. He was a barn cat, so he smelled like hay (so sweet) and I asked for a little bit to take with me for him to not feel so homesick for his mom and litter mates. He was quite scared on the drive home and cried quite a bit. I put him in his kitten pen and by instinct (?) he uses the litter box, so I'm very happy about that. I think his mom did show him to go to the bathroom in sawdust, so it isn't that different. Phew!
His vet appointment went well. We dewormed him since he was living outisde (and the next day his fecal exam did come up positive for ringworm). He'll have a second treatment on his next vet appointment in a few weeks. He got a vaccination, and he was also tested for FIV and Felv (both negative, thank goodness), but will be tested again in 6 months to make sure.
After only 36 hours of being with us he has decided that he DETESTS being in the kitten pen. He likes to be out and about and climbing and going bonkers.
Now the part that is applicable to this blog - Milky Way. Jabez is very unsure and unhappy about August, but Milky is curious and almost nonchalant. It makes me nervous, but also hopeful that they'll get along. They've been exposed to each other multiple times now and Milky has mostly been content to sit in my lap. August did smack Milky in the head, though, and Milky didn't like that at all. I know that at some point they'll be "discussing" the pecking order of the household, but I'm so nervous about it. Milky can be very rough and August is so small.
